1. How do I report something suspicious in my neighborhood without giving my name?

Call the department's "Secret Witness Hotline" at 334-745-8665. This is a voice mail answering machine. You do not have to leave your name. Simply give us a brief description of the problem and we will act on your tip. Your anonymity is assured.

2. How do I get a copy of a police report?

You can pick up a copy of a police report from our Records Division at the Opelika Police Department during normal business hours of Monday through Friday 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. central time. There is a $10 charge for each report copy. We accept credit cards, cash or money orders. No checks are accepted. If you have any questions you may call one of our records clerks at 334-705-5294. The Opelika Police Department is located at 501 South 10th Street, Opelika, Alabama 36801.

If you need a crash report, you can purchase one online through Carfax. It may take a few days following the crash for the report to be uploaded in the system. You will need your report or reference number. If you need any assistance, please call 334.705.5200. 

3. Can I hire a Police Officer for a Special Event?

In order to efficiently respond to requests and manage the employment of off-duty police officers, The Opelika, AL Police Department has partnered with Off Duty Management to provide services related to hiring off-duty officers effective June 12^th, 2023.

You may request to hire off-duty police officers through the Off Duty Management web-based service, OfficerTRAK®, or calling the toll-free number below.

Off Duty Management provides the following to the customer:

• Online access to information through the OfficerTRAK® software including:
  • Job-status
  • Officer attendance
  • Field notes and media files
  • Post orders and instructions
  • Past and future shift information
• Full liability coverage for the customer, the agency, and the officer
• 24/7 customer service through their toll-free number
• Dedicated point of contact for scheduling, invoicing, and payroll.

SUPERVISOR RATE*:  A supervisor is required for a request of 4+ officers on a job.

HOLIDAY RATE**:  The holiday rate will apply to the following days: New Year’s Eve, New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, Day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Day after Christmas.  If shift starting on a holiday runs into another day then all hours will be at the holiday rate.  If shift starts on a non-holiday, and runs into a holiday then only hours worked on holiday will be at holiday rate.

 

EMERGENCY RATE***:  If request is received less than 24 hours prior to assignment the emergency pay rate goes into effect

Cancellation policy: Customer cancelling or reducing an assignment within 48 hours of the start of the assignment shall pay the greater of officer hours worked or the agency minimum hours plus ODM administrative fees for the first 24 hours of the original assignment.

4. What is required to become an Opelika Police Officer?

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Twenty-one (21) years of age
• U.S. citizen
• High school graduate or GED
• No felony convictions
• No convictions involving crimes of moral turpitude
• No convictions of domestic violence-related charges
• Good driving record
• Military personnel must have an honorable discharge

Once their online application has been received, applicants will take a Basic Ability Test, Physical Agility Test, complete a background check and formal interview, take a polygraph examination and take a medical and drug screening.

5. I collect patches from Police Departments and Fire Departments. How do I go about getting one from Opelika?

Sadly, the events of September 11th have changed everything.  And that means that the Opelika Police and Fire Departments no longer send out patches or pins that could be used to gain entry to secured areas or attached to a uniform for illegal activities.

6. How can I check the status of someone arrested by the Opelika Police Department?

Arrestees are taken to the Lee County Jail located at 1900 Frederick Road, Opelika, AL 36803. The facility can be reached at (334) 749-5651. There is also an Inmate Search available online.

7. How do I find out if I have a warrant?

We cannot confirm if someone is wanted over the phone. The individual must come to the Police Department and speak with a Police Officer or you can call the Opelika Municipal Court at (334) 705-5190 for more information.
