The cities of Auburn and Opelika and Southern Union State Community College will open their doors to more than 140 high school seniors to showcase industrial facilities and career opportunities throughout the region. National Manufacturing Day, which is celebrated on Oct. 5, is a day where American manufacturers take up the important work of inspiring young people to pursue careers in manufacturing and engineering.
“We have state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in the Auburn-Opelika area. They are clean, high-tech spaces that our science, technology, engineering and math students could ultimately work for in the future. These jobs are in high demand, require highly-skilled workers and offer excellent pay,” said Darin Baldwin, PhD, Dean of Technical Education and Workforce Development for Southern Union State Community College. “Our goal is to connect our high school students to these career paths so they know what opportunities are available.”
On Friday, high school seniors from 13 local high schools and two career technical centers will tour local manufacturing companies. Opelika Mayor Gary Fuller and Auburn Mayor Bill Ham will both help celebrate local industries by signing proclamations and hosting tours. Mayor Fuller will host his event at Mando at 9 a.m., and Mayor Ham will host his event at Donaldson at 10:15 a.m.
Following the tours, the students will complete their day at the Southern Union campus in Opelika in the Southern Room for a panel discussion at 11:30 a.m.
