MONTGOMERY - On Tuesday, June 22, 2021, Governor Ivey hosted a ceremonial bill signing for Senate Bill 119, which revises municipal elections in the state. Specifically, the new law moves roughly 97 percent of municipal elections off the presidential cycle, moves the qualification of candidates from July to June, shortens the run-off time from six to four weeks and requires the clerk to file a copy of each certificate of election with the Alabama League of Municipalities (ALM) and Secretary of State.
The legislation was endorsed by ALM and sponsored by Senator Jabo Waggoner, R - Vestavia Hills, and Representative Jim Hill, R - Odenville.
