OLLI at Auburn Lecture Series

Wednesday, August 17, 2022

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Auburn University presents Israel, the Palestinians, and US Middle East Policy with Lee Dowdy. This presentation will be held on Wednesday, August 17, from 12:30 PM to 2:00PM in the Cooper Room at the Opelika Public Library (1100 Glenn Avenue, Opelika, AL). This lecture is open to the public and no registration is necessary.

In this presentation, Dr. Dowdy will discuss the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from the perspectives of the two opposing sides, as well as from the US perspective. Since its independence in 1948, Israel has enjoyed wide-spread American public support as well as US government support. However, following Israel’s aggressive pursuit of Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank and two brutal military invasions into the Gaza Strip, that support has been eroding in recent years, both in American opinion generally and among the American Jewish community. While Israelis need security, the Palestinians need justice. In this lecture, Dr. Dowdy will propose the possibility of a more balanced American policy that will not only better serve our own interests, but also the needs of both Palestinians and Israelis.

In 2012, Dr. Dowdy retired from his position of Professor of Political Science at Alabama State University, where he also served as Chairman of the Faculty Senate and Advisor to the Student Government Association. During his long academic career, Dr. Dowdy served on the faculties of the USAF Air War College, Dalhousie University in Canada, Boston University in Europe, Mount St. Mary’s College, and Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. His naval service, research, and teaching took him to over 60 countries.
