Posted on December 8, 2021 at 9:35 AM by Leigh Krehling

We had a big night celebrating folks at the December 7, 2021 City Council meeting. I had the honor of recognizing the Exchange Club Firefighter of the nominees and winner. Fire Medic Kevin Swatts and Firefighter Taylor Mitcham were nominees and the winner of the 2021 Firefighter of the Year was Noah Allmond. Congratulations and thank you for your service to our community.

Our community is full of bright, young leaders. Last night, I recognized one of Opelika's most gifted. Taylor Smith, OHS graduate and now Howard University student, for receiving the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Scholarship. Smith is one of 15 recipients of the new four-year scholarship program dedicated to high-achieving scholars. Congratulations Taylor!

Pickleball has become a hot sport around the country. And that's true here in Opelika, too! Last night, Jim Young, Vice President & Tournament Director for the Opelika Pickleball Club, presented the city with a $60,000 check. We appreciate the hard work that the club puts into all of the tournaments played here in Opelika. This check back to the city is a direct result of that hard work!
