Sidewalk and Tree Updates 2022

In 2019, the City of Opelika began working on a long-term ADA self-evaluation/transition plan. We set out to become the safest, most business and family friendly city in America by 2023. As a part of this plan, all city sidewalks, buildings, programs and services must become ADA compliant.

This work will continue over the next several months. There will be some road closures and tree removal/pruning in the process. We appreciate your patience while we make ADA improvements around the city. For more information, contact Kevin Rice, City of Opelika ADA Compliance Officer, at 334-705-2083 or [email protected].

Completion of the ADA sidewalk replacement project on North 10th Street will be coming to fruition by the end of the next couple of weeks. There will remain a portion along the northeast side of 10th Street where re-sodding of the grass will continue for another 2 to 3 weeks.

Once North 10th Street has been completed, the construction crew will relocate to the TigerTown roundabout on Gateway Drive proceeding north on Enterprise Drive to the intersection of Enterprise Drive and Frederick Road. This will make the walkways at Tiger Town compliant with ADA regulations.

Other repairs that will be taking place in TigerTown are multiple uplifts of numerous sidewalk panels caused by tree root growth along this particular stretch that are considered potential trip/fall hazards. Four curb inlets along this route will also be repaired.
