Automobile/Vehicle Registration
Register your automobiles and mobile homes within 30 days of becoming a resident at:

Driver's License
If moving into Alabama from another state, you should obtain an Alabama Driver's License upon establishing residence. The Driver's License Examiner's Office is located at 1220 Fox Run Avenue off of Interstate 85 at Exit 62. Testing is done between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Garbage Collection
The Opelika Environmental Services Department collects garbage throughout the City, for which a monthly fee is charged (bill comes out with electric bills). To sign up for garbage collection, visit the Customer Service Department of Opelika Power Services, located at 600 Fox Run Parkway. Contact the Department by phone at 334-705-5170.

Government
The City of Opelika, the county seat of Lee County, Alabama, operates under the Mayor/Council form of government. The Mayor is elected at large and the five City Council members are elected by ward. Elections are held every four years (in the same years as Presidential elections). Lee County operates under the commission form of government with five commissioners elected by district to serve a four-year term. The highest-ranking county official is the Probate Judge, who is elected at-large. Opelika is home of the historic Lee County Courthouse located at 215 South 9th Street in Downtown Opelika.

Liquor Laws
The legal drinking age for Alabama is 21. Monday through Saturday sales must cease at 2 a.m. All alcoholic beverages purchased outside the state of Alabama are illegal inside the state of Alabama, and are considered contraband. Minors under the age of 21 are permitted to eat in establishments that serve liquor, but they cannot be served alcoholic beverages. Drivers are considered legally intoxicated and may be charged with driving under the influence of alcohol if the alcohol content in their blood is 0.08%. Alabama has an implied-consent breath analysis law. If you are suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol, you are required to take a breath test. Refusal can result in a 90-day suspension of your driver's license.
Marriage License
To get married without parental consent you must be 18 years or older. To obtain a license, both applicants must appear in person at the Lee County Probate Office. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For further information call 334-745-9761.

Pets
Leash laws are in effect in Opelika. A current rabies vaccination certificate must be kept. The Lee County Humane Society provides facilities and various services for the benefit of animals. Contact the Society at 334-821-3222.

Most of the residents in the City of Opelika are able to utilize the City's own power company services, Opelika Power Services (OPS). If you are not in the area where OPS runs, your electricity provider will either be Alabama Power or Tallapoosa Electric. Public School
Opelika City Schools. Children must be 5 years old on or before September 2nd to enter Kindergarten, and six years old on or before September 2nd to enter first grade. Schools are zoned by the location of the child’s residence. Opelika has three primary schools for students in K through 3 grades and three intermediate schools for grades 3 through 5.
