Opelika, the county seat of Lee County, is located in east central Alabama along Interstate 85 between Atlanta and Montgomery, only thirty miles from Columbus, Georgia, one hour from Montgomery, less than two hours from Birmingham and only one hour and fifteen minutes from Atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport.

Opelika is part of the Auburn-Opelika Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), a one county MSA comprised of the cities of Auburn, Opelika, Smiths Station, and surrounding Lee County. The cities of Opelika and Auburn are contiguous, sharing the benefits of numerous cultural and community amenities and resources.

Transportation Networks

In addition to Interstate 85, Opelika is served by three major U.S. Highways:

  • U.S. 29
  • U.S. 280
  • U.S. 431

Opelika has five existing interchanges along Interstate 85. These interchanges are located at U.S. 29, U.S. 280, U.S. 431,  Alabama Highway 51, and the Northeast Opelika Industrial Park.
