Dress Code & Conduct

If you appear before the Municipal Court, you will need to adhere to the following dress code. Clothes and appearance during court must be safe and not disrupt the judicial process. Remember you are appearing in a court of law. A good guidance to follow when getting ready for court is to dress as you would when going for an important job interview or to church.

Dress Code

The following items are inappropriate to wear during a court appearance:

  • Clothing emblazoned with obscene words, images or messages contemptuous or disrespectful of the judicial process
  • Clothing that depicts or promotes violence, sex acts, illegal drug use, racism, gangs or obscene language
  • Clothing that exposes the midriff or underwear
  • Clothing with an emblem or wording that promotes illegal or inappropriate activity
  • Flip flops
  • Hats
  • House shoes
  • Pants that fall below the waist (sagging)
  • See-through tops
  • Skirts or dresses that are too revealing
  • Sleepwear/pajamas

Courtroom Conduct

Your conduct in court is equally important. Courtroom conduct includes:

  • Any children present in the courtroom must remain quiet and well-behaved
  • No chewing gum
  • No food or drink
  • No sleeping
  • No use of tobacco
  • No weapons or firearms
  • Please silence all cell phones while in the courtroom
