Our annual youth camp is for fourth grade students, going into the fifth grade. It is for children who might now otherwise get to participate in a summer activity. It is three days of fun in the sun at Springvilla Park. Activities include:
- Nature hikes
Each year the Opelika Police Department (OPD) hosts a youth camp on the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of the first week after school lets out for summer break. The students are those who have just finished 4th grade and are chosen by the school system.
At the OPD youth camp there are all sorts of fun activities for the youth and their camp counselors to do! Some of the things we have lined up for them include:
- Playing organized games
- Swimming every day at Covington Recreation Center
We also bring in guest speakers who talk to the students about the importance of staying in school, building character and making the right decisions in life. Several divisions of the OPD put on demonstrations for the students, and also provides lunch and several snacks throughout the day, courtesy of many area businesses and restaurants.
Camp 2005 featured 38 kids. We were fortunate to have Will Herring and T.J. Jackson from Auburn University's football team (and both former OHS high school players) come speak to our students. They were both a big hit with the kids! Another guest speaker was Lee County Family Court Judge, Richard Lane. Judge Lane comes out every year and speaks to our students. He's always a big hit with our kids - this year was no exception!
The OPD would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the area businesses who donated so much to make this year's Youth Camp a success. If it were not for you, we would not be able to hold this camp every year!
