Curbside Recycling

We offer single stream curbside recycling.

NOTE: If your service day falls on Thanksgiving, we will service you on Wednesday. Since Christmas is on a different day each year, Christmas week pickup is different each year. We always run radio ads, newspaper ads, post on the city's social media accounts and on this website.

Recycling Convenience Centers

The City of Opelika has two drop off sites for recycling.

8th Avenue Center
600 8th Avenue
(near Denson Rec Center)
Gate will open at 8 a.m. Friday and close at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Jeter Avenue Center
675 Jeter Avenue
(across from Jeter Primary School)
Gate will open at 8 a.m. and close at 2 p.m., Monday-Friday.

CURBSIDE RECYCLING

Single stream Curbside Recycling is collected every other week. Curbside recycling is offered at $10 per month with the first two months free. To sign up, please call Opelika Power Services at 334.705.5170, or visit opelika-al.gov and click on Environmental Services – then click on­­­ Recycling Services. CURBSIDE MATERIALS ACCEPTED

Our single stream/curbside recycling accepts the following:

  • Aluminum cans
  • Cardboard
  • Newspaper, magazines and other mixed paper
  • Plastic: all plastic bottles and jugs accepted; please wash any plastic containers that contained food
  • Steel cans: all cans must be washed out

CURBSIDE MATERIALS NOT ACCEPTED

The following items are not accepted in our curbside single stream or with single stream at our recycling convenience centers:

  • No plastic bags
  • No styrofoam
  • No trash or wood

We often have contamination with our recycling. The Solid Waste Association of North American released a great video showing the most common issues with contamination. Please do what you can to help us recycle right! Thanks.

Jeter and 8th Avenue Full-Service Recycling Centers

  • All Single Stream Items (place in black containers)
  • Cardboard (break down and place in appropriate container)
  •  Electronics are no longer accepted. Please dispose of items in your yard waste.
  • Appliances
  • Cooking oil (in plastic jugs) -- Call OES for a gallon jug.
  • Tires (Opelika residents only; limit 8) - no businesses
  • Yard waste (Jeter only)

NO GLASS, BATTERIES OR ELECTRONICS ACCEPTED.

Note: The following stores have confirmed that they will recycle plastic bags. Winn-Dixie, WalMart, Piggly Wiggly, Kroger, Target, Best Buy and Kohls.

Battery Source will take all types of batteries. Lowe's and Home Depot will take certain types of batteries. Please call stores for details.

Shredded paper must be bagged, tied and placed in the appropriate container. Do not place in 300-gallon containers.

If you want to donate your aluminum cans to the United Way of Lee County, please bag them and place in the aluminum can bin.
