The Planning Department manages the orderly growth and development of the City of Opelika and is responsible for the following:

The administration of regulations, such as Land Development, Zoning Ordinances, Subdivision regulations, including reviews and administration of rezoning and “conditional use” requests.

The processing for all building and sign permit applications, applications for home occupation licenses, and the installation of accessory buildings.

Provides enforcement for the City concerning zoning ordinances, subdivision regulations, the debris ordinance, the weed ordinance, conditional use approvals from the Planning Commission, the Historic Preservation Commission approvals, construction site compliance with city codes, and complaints from citizens regarding possible zoning ordinance violations.

The Planning Department presents proposed development / zone changes and/or expansions to the Opelika Planning Commission at their regularly scheduled meetings (4th Tuesday of each month).  Once the proposal meets the approval of the Opelika Planning Commission it goes before the City Council for approval, after public hearings have been opened and closed and duly published.  For information on the next Planning Commission meeting  click here.
