City News

In June, Opelika Scrap Material notified the City of Auburn they could no longer take their plastic. When the City of Auburn announced they would not be able to take plastics effective July 1st, Opelika Environmental Services decided to take a wait-and-see approach on what impact this would have on our recycling convenience centers, especially the location on Grand National Parkway near the Westside Waste Water Treatment Plant. There were Facebook posts from some Opelika residents encouraging Auburn residents to bring their plastics to our locations. OES began receiving calls from Auburn residents and responded that plastics could be brought to our sites, but the sites would be monitored and if the volume began to cause operational issues, that plastic from Auburn residents would not be allowed. The operational issue with plastic is that plastic is very light and very voluminous which requires more trips tothe Pratt Recycling Facility in Columbus. After analyzing the first few weeks,it is apparent that the volume of plastic is more than our convenience centers can handle, and we are requesting that Auburn residents not use our convenience centers.

When Opelika rolled out its single-stream curbside recycling program in October, our citizens were very patient and continue to be patient as we continue to upgrade our program.

We encourage Auburn residents to be patient also as Auburn rolls out their single-stream curbside recycling program later this year. Once it is in place, it will be much better than the current program.

Opelika, as a member of the East Alabama Recycling Partnership, has worked closely with Auburn, Lee County and Auburn University in attaining approximately $1,500,000 in grants to EARP members and looks forward to continuing to work together on future recycling opportunities.
