10/21/2016  as Jan H. Gunter announces Retirement

The City of Opelika welcomes Ms. Leigh G. Krehling to the city’s leadership lineup on November 7,2016, as the City’s new Community Relations Specialist. Krehling will replace the current Community Relations Specialist, Jan H. Gunter, who is retiring after fourteen (14) years with the City, on February 1, 2017.

“I am very excited about the Mayor’s decision to hire Leigh Krehling to take my place,” Ms. Gunter remarked. “When I came on board with the City of Opelika on January 6, 2003, the City hadn’t had a Community Relations Department for over six months. We had no website up and running, and no one to write the city’s newsletters and communiques and get them out to the public.  I have worked hard to build lines of communications between the city and its internal and external publics. Leigh will not only be able to take over all that I have accomplished, she will be able to build on that and make it even better! The City of Opelika is very fortunate to get her on board!”

“Jan Gunter has done an exceptional job handling our community relations for the past 14 years.” Mayor Gary Fuller stated, “It will be difficult for me to see her retire.  Not only was Jan a professional in every sense of the word, she was – and is – a good friend!”

Mayor Fuller went on to state, “While we are sad to see Jan retire, we are excited to welcome Leigh Krehling.  Leigh brings alot of experience and expertise from the private sector, and that will serve her well in her position with the City of Opelika.”

Krehling is a 1995 graduate of Auburn University with a B.A. in Corporate Journalism, and a Minor in Public Relations. She began her professional career by working as the Communications and Events Specialist for UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Ala., from 1995 to 1999.  She then came to work for Ellis-Harper Advertising in Auburn, Ala., where she was responsible for marketing services, coordination of projects and accounts for regional clients, writing and management of content for media outlets, including print, radio, television and electronic visual productions. She also collaborated with graphic designers on projects such as print ads, signage, newsletters, brochures and websites.

In 2007, she was promoted to Agency Manager, with the added responsibilities of overseeing communications with agency employees, as well as both potential and existing clients, all with the goal of fostering strong, positive relationships between Ellis-Harper Advertising and their clients.

Krehling says, “I am delighted to join the City of Opelika family. I live here and my children attend school here. This community is a part of me. I have big shoes to fill with Jan retiring, but I’m excited to continue and further develop the great work she has done over the last 14 years. I look forward to working alongside Mayor Fuller and his team to ensure the residents of Opelika are aware of current events, news and information in a timely manner.”
